Six years after "Welcome to Daytona" (another of David Mann's works) appeared in an Easyriders centerspread, Dave returned to the theme of Daytona as the symbol of spring's rebirth. Unlike the earlier painting, the scene in this 1990 work is not a specific location welcoming (quite literally) a group of southern Florida bikers to Daytona. Instead, the transition from the imprisonment of the cold to the liberation of warmth is expressed as a visual metaphor, depicting the imaginary spot where icy highways of winter turn into sunny roads of spring. Winter without end becomes deliverance in Daytona. |
